CHAPTER 14

Letter from Khotan

from the Biography of the Trepiá¹aka Master

On his return journey to China, Xuanzang crossed over the formidable Pamir mountain range and then followed a route along the southern rim of the Tarim Basin. The king of Khotan extended a warm welcome and Xuanzang took the opportunity to rest and resupply. Members of his party traveled to the cities of Kucha and Kashgar in search of copies of texts they had lost while crossing the Indus River. During that time, Xuanzang composed the following letter to alert officials in Chang’an that he would soon be returning to the capital. The court’s response, which arrived seven or eight months later, must have come as a relief. The emperor eagerly awaited Xuanzang’s arrival and he had instructed the governors of the cities ahead to supply him with porters and horses.
